Masai Mara

Of course, when you come to Africa you expect to see some cool animals.  One of the most famous places to go is the Masai Mara (on border with Tanzania) and we've been saving it for a special occasion - now!

We opted to go by plane because of time (and Mum didn't recommend the road way) - a bit sick-making for some of us but some great views.

The hotel looked out over the plains

Slightly zany styling!

The most dramatic thing on our first safari drive was the approaching rain storm...

The next day dawned brighter and we saw four of the Big Five in one morning!
Even just driving around was fun

Here come all the animal photos...

Leopard (very lucky to see one this clearly)

 Black rhino

 Hyenas

Lilac breasted roller (Mum's favourite bird)

There was a lot of wildlife to be seen just around the hotel
Luckily Ruth didn't see this one (it was harmless apparently)

 Rock hyrax

 A weaver bird
 And his nest
Mongeese

A surprise safari breakfast by the hippo pools

With a Masai guide

Despite being a bit late in the season, there were still plenty of wildebeeste around, the tail end of the migration.  We found them right on the border with Tanzania.

Of course we had to cross the border, the controls were fairly lax!
