With Deborah away on her conference, Justin was a free man...
Tuesday (Day 5)
First things first, a game of tennis with Jon!
Then it was time to look at Jon's new solar irrigation pump with Dau. Could something like this be useful in South Sudan?
Bringing Dau and Sammy together at Java House to compare notes and discuss plans for serving God in the coming year.
Then it was off to Dau's house in Karen to stay for 2 nights.
Wednesday (Day 6)
Fluffy pancakes, fruit cocktail and cheap maple syrup for breakfast!
Walking to Dau's college past the local shops
Inside the college campus
The college cafe provided a great place to sit and plan together for a few hours
And eat of course!
Meeting Enoch, the course leader for Development Studies
We then enjoyed a couple of hours walking, talking and praying in nearby Resurrection Gardens
Walking home - a classic view of Africa
Stopping at a local shop to buy phone credit
Justin teaches Dau's sister and cousin how to make pizza (a rather uncomfortable experience all round - men never enter the kitchen in Sudanese culture!)
But the results are worth it!
Thursday (Day 7)
Back in town Thursday morning Justin meets Marilla who joined the Doro school team just after we left in 2015 and is reunited with Getachew, an Ethiopian missionary on the South Sudan team.
Then it was off for a visit to the Children's Home "The Brydges Centre" where Justin's parents have helped on a number of occasions. You can be sure of a special welcome each time you arrive with songs and a parade from the children.
They took Justin to the tree they had planted in Fiona's memory and asked him to say a few words.
Progress since his last visit was significant: beautifully landscaped grounds...
... and a new dining hall. Manager Daniel stands on the spot where a water fountain is going to be built with funds raised at Fiona's funeral.
A bungalow for babies and their carers had also been completed. This is the baby boy's room.
Dau makes a new friend
Dau came to see the farm (he is getting interested in helping his home area in South Sudan with agriculture). Sammy came with us as it is his aunt who started and runs the home.
Since Justin's last visit they have build separate classrooms for each year group.
They laid on a lovely lunch for us
With Rosemary (Sammy's aunt) and the water fountain
Standing with food gifts bought with money given by a family in Christ Church, Cambridge
Toys and stationery provided by another friend in Cambridge
Then it was into the sprawling concrete suburbs of eastern Nairobi to visit Pastor Fridah who was responsible for the children's ministry at Good Shepherd when Justin taught Sunday school.
Their hospitality was generous in the extreme and Justin enjoyed his first sleep over in a Kenyan home (though remains grateful that buses in England don't lean on their horns every time they stop at a bus stop - even at night!)
Fridah with husband Patrick, son Joel (centre) and nephew
Friday (Day 8)
Goodbye to Sammy - he would be leaving for a mission trip to Congo the following day
Visiting James Haruun (second left) at Nairobi Pentecostal Bible College where he hopes to finish his degree at the end of the year.
James' best friend Damascene from Rwanda accompanied us for a meal out.
Pizza supper with Jake and Theresa and family (waiting for Deborah to get back from the conference)
