October - Nakuru holiday

For October half-term we had promised ourselves that we'd re-visit the lovely Kembu Cottages at Nakuru - we didn't stay long enough last time!  At Caleb's special request we took the old Gilgil Road again so that he could do some rock-climbing.
It's a beautiful view
Probably even better from up there

This camera's got a great zoom!

Our last trip to Kembu had cured Beth of her fear of dogs thanks to a little chap called Buster's friendliness.  Buster has found a new home in the diplomatic service and this big chap, Obelix, took Bethanie's confidence to a new level!

Justin in his happy place

One of our favourite things about this place - a log fire every evening - and we came well-prepared with marshmallows!

This time we took a trip to Nakuru National Park - can you see that the Main Gate is nearly underwater?  The lake is at a 70 year high.

Nakuru is famous for its birds.  You are not so sure of seeing large flocks of flamingoes these days as they are preferring Lakes Bogoria and Baringo further north. Here is a Eurasian bee-eater passing through.

Nakuru also has both white (wide-lipped) and black (narrow mouthed) rhino.  I'm not sure which one we're looking at here as his head is behind the bush and I'm not expert enough to tell from the rest of him!

A very scenic road within the park that currently goes no further!

Here are a few Lesser Flamingoes

And some amazing weaver-bird creations

A rather hairy drive got us to this amazing viewpoint on the 'Baboon Cliffs'

Time for a picnic.  We're loving the car Nate and Ginna - thanks!  We'll be very happy to exchange it for having your family back in January though :)

This is the way to cope with the midday sun - I think both small boys and buffalo would be very happy there - preferably not together!

Most days were spent just mooching around in Kenana Cottage and it's lovely garden - with games to invent, pictures to paint, puzzles to do, tennis to play, books to read, we just don't have time to go out...

Can you translate Bethanie's comment in the visitors' book?  We all agree.
We stopped for lunch on the way home at a new Pizza/Chicken Inn that has a terrace overlooking the Rift Valley and Mount Longonot - and not a curio salesman in sight!
